CAST : Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Paul Walker, Ludacris

Never thought I’d say this about F&F but this movie was simply awesome! Just before I get to that part, let’s slide over to the dark side for a moment. The first scene summarises Fast & Furious, the 2009 release also directed by Lin. Dominic is on a convict bus to prison and his gang busts him out. What defined this movie was the scene in which one of the gang’s cars flips a bus. In real life that would never happen. After two hours you will still be repeating that statement. The difference is, you won’t care at all because you’ll be enjoying the movie so much, you’ll wish it wasn’t ending.
The story is that Dom has been busted out of prison and is lined up for one more big score before trying to disappear into the unknown. Unfortunately two people will stand in his way. One is the Brazilian drug lord he’s trying to steal from. The other is a rabid FBI agent (The Rock) after his own big score. At some point the two gigantic men face-off, fist on muscle, wall to wall, furniture breaking stuff. It’s one of the most gripping scenes of the movie.
The setting is Rio de Janeiro, but not the Rio you see on TV or in brochures, you know, the one awash with white beaches and half-naked women. This Rio is filthy, overrun, shacks worse than Alexandra, and ugly people. One of Dom’s old gang members lives here with a new woman and small child. He sets up the gig, a train takedown. Of course things go terribly wrong and a list of dominos starts falling over one by one.
One of the best aspects of Fast 5 is not the bad acting and dialogue, but the return of familiar characters from previous editions, like Roman Pearce (Tyrese), Mia (Jordana Brewster), Tej (Ludacris) and the funny Tokyo Drift twosome of Tego and Reco.
Fast & Furious matches or even surpasses the first movie for entertainment value. It will be central to a great night out.
