Yesterday the world watched in shock as pictures and videos
depicting a dying Muammar Gaddafi being dragged along a street, bleeding. Eventually
the former Libyan President of 42 years passed on, leaving the world with one
less political dictator. Ever since the Libyan uprisings a few months ago, Gaddafi
had been extremely defiant of what was an obvious tail end of his reign.
NATO, the US and the Libyan rebels were clearly determined
to oust “brother leader” the “king of Africa”, in the same way the US were
hell-bent on finding Osama bin Laden, the same way they got rid of Saddam Hussein.
It’s one by one as these long-serving leaders fall. Just ask Hosni Mubarak.
Libya is rich in oil and gas, and some in the US are saying Europe
and Asia are moving in on “their” territory when it was the US who led the air
strikes against Gaddafi. Most prominent of these voices is billionaire Donald
Trump who seems to be leading the opposition voices against President Obama.
Gaddafi of course had vast amounts of money spread across the
globe. Even here in Mzansi he and his family are said to have owned or own
several high-profile businesses, including the Michaelengelo Hotel and Towers
in Sandton. He was very close to the ANC, especially the Mandelas.
