THREE NEW SAMA HOSTS TO REPLACE TREVOR NOAH

And the new MTN South African Music Awards 17 presenters are…(drum roll)…Phat Joe and Bonang Matheba! Yes ladies and gents, show up at the SAMAs this month and be entertained by the Phat one and your girl Miss B from the BEE hive. But that’s not all. Sizwe Dhlomo is joining them too! The three replaced the hilarious Trevor Noah who really put the SAMAs back on the map as an entertainment event. How these two will show him up remains a mystery.

We know Joe from his days at Yfm where he quickly grew a reputation for being a shock jock. His on-air stunts often landed him at the principal’s office (I should know, I was working in the same building). At the same time he was hosting his own TV show on etv (shot at Red Pepper studios in Linden, Jozi) called the Phat Joe Show. He then left Yfm and joined Metro FM where he continued scaring his bosses with BCC-inviting tricks. Eventually they booted him out too and for a while he was out of a radio job. Then Kaya FM picked him up and for a while it seemed he was a changed man, until he ridiculed Caster Semenya and was shown the door once again. Joe is currently working at Heart FM in Cape Town. His most recent TV gig was co-presenting the Real Goboza show with actress Brenda Ngxoli.

Dhlomo cut his presenting teeth on Channel O and MTV Base. He’s now hosting three weekly shows on Yfm with his mate Siyabonga Ngwekazi. Ironically Ngwekazi was approached a few weeks ago to host the SAMA Nominees announcement party, which he quickly declined because the broke show wasn’t gonna pay him. And I wonder if SAMA hosts get paid in anything other than those “goodie bags” with Xbox consoles and games.

Matheba on the other hand earns her main bread as a jock at Gauteng-based Yfm where she hosts a show called the Bee Hive. Her second pocket-filler is the SABC 1 music show Live. She also has a clothing line I think, I haven’t seen it myself.

Bonang became quite famous for being the girl rapper Slikour dumped on FaceBook. Speaking of Slikour, the man is the new solo presenter of Jam Alley. Siyabonga Metane as he was named by his parents, replaces Twasa and Tido to become the new main Jammer. Other notables who’ve worn that hat before include Mr Lotto Nimrod Nkosi (your late mate), the indomitable Vinoliah “Vee Mash” Mashego and of course Wilson B. Nkosi. Slikour drops the last of his Ventilation mix tapes soon in order to concentrate 100% on this new career. Let’s hope he can fully represent on one of Mzansi’s oldest TV shows currently on air.
