HARRY POTTER MAGIC BURSTS BOX OFFICE WIDE OPEN

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the final adventure of the film series based on the beloved books by J.K. Rowling, worked its magic at the local box office earning almost R8.4 million in its opening weekend.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opened on 96 screens, with fans lining up for hours to be among the first to see the film.  The opening weekend gross was 31% bigger than the previous best Harry Potter.  This also makes it the 3rd biggest opening of all time in South Africa.

Debbie McCrum, General Manager of Nu Metro Films, stated, “After a decade of Harry Potter films, the final film is truly a cultural event, and we’re thrilled to see this powerful response from such a broad range of moviegoers.  These incredible results are a testament to the incredible achievement of the filmmakers, cast, and, of course, J.K. Rowling, and should ensure the film series’ place in history for years to come.”

The Harry Potter film series had already achieved the distinction of being the top-grossing film franchise of all time, a milestone it reached with the combined success of the first five films.
