Alcohol advertising may soon follow the way of cigarette advertising by falling into the throes of history and theses studies. That’s if Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has his way. Motsoaledi told delegates at COSATU’s conference that alcohol was one of society’s ills that has to be gotten rid of. And one of the ways proposed is to ban advertisements promoting alcohol and its use.
Back in 2000 a law came into effect that effectively killed all forms of cigarette promotion, including advertising, themed private parties, giveaways and all others. At the time I worked for Y magazine and our advertising revenue went down about R100 000 overnight, thanks to this law which was advocated by then Health Minister Dr Nkosazana Zuma!
A similar fate now awaits all media which has so far benefitted from alcohol advertising. More than that, jobs will be lost in the sector as companies begin to lose money. Other victims will include those who benefit from alcohol sponsorships, such as taverns with their billboards, sporting codes like beer-sponsored football and rugby teams.

I agree with our Health Minister Dr. Motsoaledi that alcohol is an evil that must be rooted out of society. As a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ I have counseled many people who fell victim to alcohol abuse and I even had to counsel young children who were sexually assaulted, than perverts use the excuse they were drunk and could not remember what they did. I support and salute our health minister
This will be sad to see but I guess alcholol is a drug of some kind since tis' addictive and all.
Sorry minister but it won't work. actually I read that in many cases more people started smoking after that ban. even today lots of youngsters have picked up smoking even though its not advertised and there are warnings.
I also agree, its not good especially when u know u have to drive,i mean how many people should die before its taken seriously, this is not a movie,it is someone's son, daughter, mother or father it can also happen to you or your family use your conscience.
we must look at it in both ways, other families depend on its money while while others die from it.i think we all have to be responsible of what we do and all will fall in to place.
